Yo-yos, spinning tops and chocolate goodies will always find a well-deserved place in the stuffed stockings that drape the living room mantle every holiday season, but this year, you might add something new: An organ donor and next-of-kin card. It might well save a life.
Every year, hundreds of men, women and children on transplant waiting lists in Canada die because a suitable organ cannot be found in time.
A single organ donor leaves a precious legacy that could save not one, but many lives. The organs that served us so well during our own lifetime might bring new hope to someone waiting for a transplant of a heart, lung, kidney, liver or other vital organ or tissue.
Becoming an organ donor is as easy as ABC: Sign an organ donor card and keep it in your wallet, discuss your decision with your loved ones, and give them a next-of-kin notification card to ensure that your wish to donate will be carried out.
